A 30-day food supply for a family of four is about 240,000 calories: 4 people x 2,000 calories x 30 days. A single "30-day" kit is sized for one person, so it covers a family of four for about a week. Four 4-week kits come to 225,840 calories, roughly 28 days.

The target: 240,000 calories
The working, using the same 2,000-calorie planning figure that FDA calls a general guide (FDA, Calories on the Nutrition Facts label):
- 4 people x 2,000 calories = 8,000 calories a day
- 8,000 x 30 days = 240,000 calories
For the reasoning behind 8,000 and how it shifts with age and activity, see how much food a family of four needs. This page puts a 30-day supply of an emergency food supply for family of four into three practical routes.
Three ways to fill it
Groceries. Shelf-stable foods from a normal store. Ready.gov lists canned meats, fruits and vegetables, protein and fruit bars, dry cereal, peanut butter, dried fruit, shelf-stable milk and comfort foods, and suggests items that need no refrigeration, cooking, water or special preparation (Ready.gov, Food). Prices depend on your store and region, so this guide gives no grocery cost figure. The advantage is choice: the family eats what it already likes. The cost is shelf space and bookkeeping, because you track dates yourself. The emergency food list turns this into a packing list.
A packaged kit. Prices and calories are fixed and published, and the food is freeze-dried or dehydrated, so it needs water and a heat source to prepare.
A mix. Many households buy one kit for the core and fill the gap with groceries they already eat.
The kit route, with the arithmetic
Prices were read from My Patriot Supply's product pages on 2026-10-14. All of its kits are priced per person.
| Option | Calories | Family-of-four days (calories / 8,000) | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| One 4-Week kit | 56,460 | about 7.1 | $277.95 |
| Four 4-Week kits | 225,840 | about 28.2 | $1,111.80 |
| One 3-Month kit | 181,960 | about 22.7 | $797.95 |
| One 3-Month kit plus one 4-Week kit | 238,420 | about 29.8 | $797.95 and $277.95 |
| One 1-Year kit | 727,840 | about 91 | $3,191.80 |
Reading the table:
- Four 4-Week kits fall about 14,160 calories short of a full 30 days (240,000 - 225,840), a little under two days. A few days of groceries closes the gap.
- A 3-Month kit plus a 4-Week kit nearly lands on 30 days at 238,420 calories.
- Per 1,000 published calories, computed from the company's figures, the 4-Week kit is $4.92 and the 3-Month kit is $4.39. So the same calories cost less in the larger kit.
- The 1-Year kit is about three times the calories you need for 30 days. It is the same price per calorie as the 3-Month kit ($4.39 per 1,000), so it fits a plan that goes beyond a month; see the 1-year guide.
My Patriot Supply states that its food lasts up to 25 years when stored properly. A 30-day supply is not close to that horizon, which makes shelf life a minor factor at this length.
If you want the pieces bundled, the Family of 4 Starter Pack (1 Week Supply) costs $499.99 (regular price $576.51). It includes one 4-Week kit ($277.95) and adds 4 survival straws, a 20,000mAh solar power bank, a folding stove, 12 cans of Canned Heat+ and waterproof matches. The rest of the bundle is about $222 on top of the food, as arithmetic on the two prices. It covers about a week for four, so it is the first step toward 30 days, not the whole supply.
How other companies' 30-day kits compare
Read from each company's own page on 2026-10-14:
| Company, kit | Price | Servings | Calories | The company says it feeds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Be Prepared, 1-Month kit | $189.99 | 257 | 56,650 (1,888 a day) | 1 person for 30 days, family of four about 1 week |
| Mountain House, 30-Day kit | $939.99 (sold out on the read date) | 180 | about 1,732 a day, total not published | 1 person for a month, or 2 people for 15 days |
Four Be Prepared 1-Month kits hold 226,600 calories (4 x 56,650), about 28.3 family-days, close to the My Patriot Supply result. The sizing logic is the same everywhere: a 30-day kit is a one-person product. The comparison article sets the three brands side by side. Augason Farms' kit pages could not be read on 2026-10-14, so no Augason figures appear here.
What to add besides food
A 30-day supply needs more than calories:
- Drinking water. Ready.gov's baseline is at least one gallon per person per day (Ready.gov, Water). For four people over 30 days that is 4 x 30 = 120 gallons, before preparing any freeze-dried meals. The water guide covers storage and purification.
- Preparation water. The partner lists 9.14 gallons to prepare one 4-Week kit, so four kits need 4 x 9.14 = 36.56 gallons. A 3-Month kit plus a 4-Week kit needs 36.12 + 9.14 = 45.26 gallons.
- A way to heat and eat. A stove or fuel, a manual can opener and utensils; Ready.gov lists the can opener and utensils.
- Infant, pet and medical needs. Formula, pet food and prescriptions are not in any kit. See the nutrition note.
Storage space and rotation
Four 4-Week kits are 8 buckets (2 each) and about 126.6 lb (4 x 31.65 lb). A 3-Month kit plus a 4-Week kit is 8 buckets and about 134.2 lb (102.53 + 31.65).
Rotation matters most for grocery items. USDA's shelf-stable food page says low-acid canned foods such as meat and vegetables keep 2 to 5 years and high-acid foods such as fruit and tomatoes 12 to 18 months (USDA FSIS, Shelf-stable food safety). Write dates on the lid and eat the oldest first. For how storage conditions affect packaged kits, see how long emergency food lasts. The partner's own pages and the My Patriot Supply review cover its policies.
FAQ
How many calories is a 30-day supply for four?
About 240,000, from 8,000 calories a day for 30 days. That assumes 2,000 per person, which suits average adults; teenagers and active adults may need more.
Does one 30-day kit feed four people for a month?
No. The partner's 4-Week kit says it feeds one person for 4 weeks, or a family of four for 1 week. For a month for four you need roughly four of them.
What is the cheapest way to reach 240,000 calories?
Among the partner's kits, larger packages cost less per published calorie than smaller ones. This guide has no grocery prices, so compare your own store's shelf-stable foods against the kit figures per 1,000 calories.
Do I need extra water?
Yes. Ready.gov's baseline is one gallon per person per day for drinking and sanitation, which is 120 gallons for four people over 30 days, plus the water used to prepare freeze-dried meals.
Can I mix kits and groceries?
Yes. A 3-Month kit covers about 22.7 days, leaving about 58,040 calories (about 7 days) to fill from groceries.
